The small orchid Oncidium cheirophorum can be found in Central America and the north of South America. The flowers of this Oncidium have a deep buttery colour and don't get any bigger than 1,5 centimetre. They compensate their small size by growing a large number of flowers on each flower stem. One stem can carry more than 10 flowers! Oncidium cheirophorum is very suitable for a larger, cooler terrarium.

Oncidium cheirophorum is found in the area between Nicaragua and Colombia. This orchid grows at altitudes between 1.000 and 2.500 meters. It has slender leaves with a length of around 20 centimetre. The leaves and flower stalks arise from round bulbs and reach a length of up to 30 centimetre. These stems carry a varied amount of yellow flowers with a branched lip. The flowers of Oncidium cheirophorum have a nice scent to accompany their beauty.
Oncidium cheirophorum is naturally found in mountainous areas, resulting in an orchid which can handle lower temperatures than others. During the day a temperature of 20⁰C is ideal, dropping to 8⁰C at night. Temperatures below 5⁰C and above 25⁰C can be too much for the orchid. This type needs a lot of light, but should be kept out of direct sunlight at all times, to prevent it from drying out. The humidity of the habitat of Oncidium cheirophorum should be 80% and slightly more at night. Water with a lot of rainwater or distilled water in the blossoming periods and less in the periods of rest. Proper airflow combined with a proper humidity will help prevent infections and disease. Oncidium cheirophorum can be kept in a pot with shreds of bark or attached to a piece of bark with moss. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. Fertilize the orchid every now and then. Old flowers can be cut from the plant.
