Neofinetia falcata is native to parts of East Asia, including Japan, Korea and China. In its natural habitat, it grows as an epiphyte on tree trunks and branches, where its roots attach themselves to the surface and benefit from good air circulation. It does not naturally grow in ordinary potting soil. This species holds a special place in Japanese orchid history. In Japan, it is traditionally known as Fūran, often translated as “wind orchid”. It has been cultivated and admired there for centuries. Interest in unusual specimens grew particularly during the Edo period, when collectors valued not only the flowers but also the shape, colour and growth habit of the leaves. This appreciation continues today in Japanese orchid collecting culture. Certain varieties are prized for their distinctive leaf patterns and unusual growth forms, making Neofinetia falcata an appealing orchid for both beginners and experienced collectors. Botanically, this species is also classified under the name Vanda falcata. Both names are used in the orchid community.
