Hydnophytum papuanum belongs to the coffee family (Rubiaceae) and is native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia and Papuasia. It naturally grows as an epiphyte on trees. Its most distinctive feature is the swollen caudex, which contains an intricate network of cavities and tunnels. In the wild, these spaces can provide shelter for ant colonies. This special relationship between plants and ants is known as myrmecophily: the ants gain a protected nesting place and can help defend the plant against herbivores.Several stems develop from the caudex, bearing opposite pairs of rounded leaves. The leaves are relatively thick and have a waxy outer layer that helps reduce water loss. Under suitable conditions, the plant can produce small white flowers, followed by striking orange fruits. Propagation is possible from seed. XXL is the commercial product designation and is not a botanical cultivar name. For additional information about this unusual ant plant, please consult the Araflora product symbols below.
Hydnophytum papuanum is a tropical epiphyte that appreciates warmth, high humidity and bright indirect light. Use a very airy, free-draining growing medium and avoid leaving the roots standing in water. Allow the medium to become almost dry between waterings, but do not leave it completely dry for extended periods.- Water: Water when the growing medium is almost completely dry. Allow excess water to drain away and never leave standing water in the saucer. Outside the active growing season, the medium can remain dry for a few extra days.
- Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.
- Temperature: Preferably maintain temperatures above 16 °C. Protect the plant from cold conditions and sudden temperature changes.
- Humidity: Relative humidity above 60% is recommended.
- Substrate: Use a very airy, free-draining mix suitable for epiphytes or orchids. Good air circulation around the roots is important.
- Feeding: From spring to autumn, apply orchid fertiliser once a month at half the recommended strength. Adjust feeding when the plant is growing slowly.
- Maintenance: Remove dead leaves when necessary and regularly check that the growing medium remains open and airy. Handle the plant carefully when repotting to avoid damaging its distinctive caudex. For additional information, please refer to the Araflora plant care symbols.
