Scadoxus multiflorus ssp katharinae 'AKA ‘Haemanthus multiflorus’' is a bulbous plant with a spectacular inflorescence: a large amount of small red flowers form a large sphere or flower head with a diameter of about 25 cm: a kind of powder brush. The flowering period of Scadoxus multiflorus is from December to March.

The flower talk of the Haemanthus multiflorus can grow quite high. The leaves are light green with vertical veins. When the flower has bloomed and been fertilized, after a while green berries appear, which upon ripening gain a orange-red color. This exotic African plant is related to the Amaryllis. Warning: the Haemanthus multiflorus is extremely poisonous 'The leaves, the berries and the bulb' and is ill-advised to keep in the vicinity of children. The plant'S name was changed recently; the genus Haemanthus has had to relinquish this species to that of the Scadocus. The meaning of the scientifically generic name 'Scadoxus' is 'Glory in the dark' 'Ska' is Green for 'Dark' and 'Doxus' means 'Glory', while the appellative 'Multiflorus' comes from Latin and means 'Many-flowered'. '‘Subspecies katharinae’ refers to Katharine Saunders, a known botanica form the second half of the previous century.'
The Powder Brush plants like Haemanthus multiflorus are suitable as house plants in Northern Europe. Temperatures around the freezing point are tough on this tropical plant. For potting we recommend a porous and nutritious soil. During the dormant period the bulb must be kept dry. When growing the Haemanthus multiflorus requires quite a bit of water, but that water must not remain on top of the soil. In summer the plant can be put outside, preferably in the shade, for example in that of a tree.
