Alocasia sanderiana is native to the Philippines and Malaysia. It is nicknamed the 'Kris Plant' because its wavy leaf edges recall the undulating blade of a 'Kris' dagger. The leaf color is quite distinctive: a green with a slight bluish tint. While the species can grow quite large in the wild, cultivated specimens remain significantly smaller, typically reaching about 60–80 cm in height. The species is threatened with extinction in the wild. Cultivated plants have leaves approximately 30–40 cm long and 15–20 cm wide, borne on stems about 60 cm tall. The cream-colored 'flower' consists of a spathe and a spadix. Orange-red berries may form following pollination. Please refer to the Araflora plant symbols below for additional information.
Alocasia sanderiana (often called the 'skeleton plant') is a striking yet undemanding houseplant. Place it in a spot with plenty of indirect sunlight (avoiding harsh, direct sun). Keep the soil consistently slightly moist, but ensure good drainage to prevent waterlogged roots. The plant requires high humidity, so mist the leaves regularly. The ideal temperature range is 18°C to 25°C; avoid placing it near drafts or heating sources. If the plant loses its leaves in winter, do not panic; it is simply entering a dormant phase and will sprout again in the spring.
