In the wild, Xanthosoma sagittifolium produces large heart-shaped leaves that can be as much as 1 metre in diameter. They are much smaller in the cultivated houseplant. It flowers often and profusely in the wild, but rarely indoors as a houseplant. In any case the flowers are less attractive than the leaves.
This fern comes originally from Central and South America. It enjoys high temperatures and lots of humidity. Xanthosoma sagittifolium is an ideal plant for a large living room or conservatory where it can dominate as the sole focus of attention. It is a large plant that requires a big pot with plenty of water that must never be stagnant. It needs a high level of humidity and fertilising regularly in order to keep its beautiful leaves in perfect condition.
