Plant information: Xanthosoma caracu

Xanthosoma caracu is a tropical plant which occurs naturally in the rainforests of South-America. Nowadays Xanthosoma caracu is grown in the Caribbean due to the plant'S edible roots. It is very popular and is used in many dishes. The roots must first be cooked in order to break down any toxins that may be present. As a plant in the living room or office the Xanthosoma caracu is especially beautiful due to its large leaves shaped like the ear of an elephant. The plant can grow very tall, over 2 meters, though this only happens in the tropics with enough light. In a somewhat darker living room it will remain smaller.

The tropical Xanthosoma caracu plant likes a spot with lots of light, but can not be in direct sunlight. The plant'S soil must remain moist. Misting with a plant sprayer increases humidity, which keeps the leaf healthy and pretty. The ambient temperature should remain between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius, room temperature is ideal. A nutrient-rich potting soil with good water retention is preferable. This Araflora plant is intended strictly for decoration, not for consumption.
