Venus flytraps are carnivorous plants that come originally from North America where they grow in poor soil and boggy conditions. Their response to the lack of nutrients has been to provide their own food. Prey such as insects and spiders, attracted by the plants’ vivid colours and fragrance, are caught in the hinged lobes of the leaf trap.
Dionaea muscipula 'Opus delight' likes boggy soil and exposure to direct sunlight. Venus flytraps do not need feeding as they obtain the nutrients they require from their prey. The growing medium must be kept wet with rainwater, boiled water or demineralised water.
