Trumpet pitcherplant 'Sarracenia x Ray'

Sarracenia x Ray - CarniSar131

Sarracenia x Ray is an amazing hybrid species and a real must-have for carnivorous plant lovers. Araflora experienced that the plants like to be standing in a sunny spot indoors, but I will also do just fine outside near a pond or when it is kept within a terrarium. Sarracenia x Ray is a beautiful pitcher plant with long and slender pitchers.

Plant information: Trumpet pitcherplant 'Sarracenia x Ray'

Sarracenia x Ray is a small growing cultivar from the North-American carnivorous pitcher plants from the Sarracenia genus. Within Sarracenia x Ray the genes of Sarracenia flava are clearly visible because of the slender shape of the pitchers. Insects are being attracted by the sugars being produced by glands within the pitchers, the insects confuse the sugars for nectar. There is almost no way out of the pitchers again once the insects are trapped, because of the tiny hairs and the waxy layer within the pitchers. The hoods of the pitchers will make sure the insects really can’t escape anymore. The pitchers of Sarracenia x Ray have an impressive copper-like colour with a green lip at the end of the pitchers. Araflora saw that the colouration of the pitchers will increase in intensity with higher exposure to sunlight. Sarracenia x Ray has beautiful pink flowers. A big advantage of the Sarracenia species is that they are hardy plants to a more or lesser extent.

Plant care: Trumpet pitcherplant 'Sarracenia x Ray'

While Sarracenia x Ray is a hardy plant it can be kept outdoors near a pond or in a vegetable garden too, besides being kept as an indoor plant. However, it won’t harm the plant to covered it up a bit with hay during a severe frost period or when it is snowing, put some extra snow on the plants in order to cope with the period of frost. It is very important that Sarracenia x Ray never dries out and therefore it is fine to keep the plant on a bed of water. Sarracenia x Ray needs a nutrient poor soil, Araflora therefore uses a mix of peat, sand and perlite. Sarracenia species don’t like water with a high calcium content, therefore the plant will be happy if you supply it with rainwater instead of tap water. Leaves that have turned brown can be removed while they do not serve any function any longer. Sarracenia x Ray loves sunlight it might also weaken when it is in shortage of light.
