Plant information: Trumpet pitcherplant 'Sarracenia flava var. Maxima '050022'

The Sarracenia flava is an American pitcher-plant and belongs to a special family of carnivorous plants from the US and Canada. The cup-shaped snares of the Sarracenia flava are long and slim and in the wild they can sometimes reach to about a metre high. Depending on the type of subspecies of the Sarracenia flava their colour is yellow, reddish-brown or green. The inside of the snare is smooth, so insects that drop in, cannot climb up again against its sides. On the bottom of the snare is a layer of acid liquid with digestive enzymes, in which the insect drowns and is digested. Above the snare hangs an immobile lid, which serves as an umbrella preventing the snare being flooded by rain water. The lid is also an excellent landing site for the prey of this plant. The flowers of this type of Sarracenia are yellow. Since the Sarracenia flava belongs to the easiest-to-care-for Sarracenia species, Araflora particularly wants to recommend this plant to enthusiasts who are as yet unfamiliar with this exclusive pitcher-plant. An extra bonus: the Sarracenia flava is a hardy plant.

Plant care: Trumpet pitcherplant 'Sarracenia flava var. Maxima '050022'

The Sarracenia flava is a special carnivorous plant, which can not only be kept indoors but also all the year round outdoors in a vegetable garden or near a pond. The Sarracenia flava is a hardy species which can stand severe frost as long as the plant is covered with hay and the soil does not dry out. Indoors the container of the Sarracenia flava must always be placed on a bed of water. In the garden the ideal spot is near the edge of the pond. The soil of the Sarracenia flava should be poor in nutrients. Araflora uses a mix of peat, sand and perlite. Feeding the plant with insects is not necessary for its growth.
