Drosera tomentosa is a sundew species that is native to Brazil (from northeastern Goiás to Sergipe and Monas Gerais). It is a perennial carnivorous plant species that grows mainly in the seasonally dry tropical habitat. Drosera tomentosa forms compact rosettes of narrow, hairy leaves that are liberally covered with dew glands. These sticky glands trap small insects, which are then digested by enzymes. During flowering, the plant produces delicate flowers in white to light pink tones that rise gracefully above the rosette. The rosette stays low and compact, about 5–8 cm in diameter, and 5–10 cm tall, making it ideal for small terrariums or windowsills. Drosera tomentosa forms underground roots that help it survive dry periods in the wild.
For healthy growth, Drosera tomentosa needs plenty of light; place the plant in a location with bright sunlight or use strong artificial light. The soil should be low in minerals, such as a mixture of peat moss and sand, which retains moisture but remains well-draining. During the growing season, the soil should be continuously moist, possibly with a small bowl of water under the pot. Drosera tomentosa is native to Brazil in wet, nutrient-poor locations with little vegetation. For optimal growth, a daytime temperature of around 25°C (77°F) is ideal, with nighttime temperatures of at least 15°C (59°F). In spring and summer, the plant can be placed outdoors, but out of direct sunlight. Bring the plant indoors when temperatures drop below 15°C (59°F). The substrate can consist of a low-moisture, peat- or sand-based mixture. Drosera tomentosa tolerates waterlogged conditions well and can happily sit in a small bowl of water. Feeding is usually not necessary, as this carnivorous plant catches insects; occasional feeding can stimulate growth and flowering. Remove dead leaves to prevent disease and keep the plant healthy. Drosera tomentosa is a compact and charming sundew, perfect for anyone looking to add a unique carnivorous plant to their collection.
