The Drosera calistos plant has a rosette-shaped growth habit with fine, reddish leaves covered in glistening glandular hairs. These hairs produce sticky droplets used to trap small insects from which the plant extracts additional nutrients. Drosera calistos is native to Western Australia, where it grows in nutrient-poor, moist sandy or peaty soils. It thrives in areas with a Mediterranean climate – wet winters and dry summers. In the wild, this Sundew often forms dense mats in open, sunny locations. The symbols below will give you some indications care background for this plant.
Drosera calistos is easy to cultivate. Use an airy, acidic substrate of sphagnum moss and sand, and keep the soil consistently lightly moist with soft (rain or osmosis) water. Place the plant in a very bright spot, preferably with direct sunlight, to enhance its characteristic red coloration. During the warm summer period, the plant can be kept slightly drier, while in winter it benefits from a cooler, more humid rest period. Feeding is unnecessary – the plant catches its own small insects. Care Guide Light: Plenty of direct sunlight or a strong grow light Water: Keep constantly moist with rain or osmosis water Substrate: Mix of sphagnum moss and sand (no fertilizer) Temperature: 10–25 °C Dormancy: Cooler, more humid winters This beautiful mini sundew is ideal for terrariums or bright windowsills. With its compact size and glistening dew droplets, Drosera calistos is a true eye-catcher! For additional care information see the care sheet of Araflora.
