Pleurothallis sonderiana originates from the interior of Brazil, where it grows in humid and scattered mountain forests. This orchid has short, elongated and slightly thickened leaves, with striking yellow flowers appearing just above the leaves. Unlike many other orchids, Pleurothallis sonderiana forms large petals instead of a pronounced lip. Two of the petals enclose the rest of the flower and resemble wings, giving the flowers a unique and elegant appearance. Due to its miniature size, Pleurothallis sonderiana can easily be placed in a pot with orchid mix or attached to bark or wood, mimicking the plant's natural growth. For additional plant information about this special orchid, see the Araflora plant symbols.
Pleurothallis sonderiana is a relatively easy orchid to care for, making it ideal for novice growers. Pleurothallis sonderiana grows best at temperatures between 14°C and 22°C and does not tolerate extreme cold below 10°C or heat above 30°C. This species prefers high humidity of around 80% and thrives in a shady environment, unlike many other orchids. Regular watering is important, with daily misting with rainwater or distilled water ensuring optimal humidity without mineral accumulation in the roots. In addition, Pleurothallis sonderiana needs good air circulation to prevent disease and infection. The orchid can be planted in a pot with orchid mix or attached to bark or wood, materials that Araflora also offers online. Dead flower stems can be removed to keep the plant healthy, and if necessary, light plant food can be given to support growth.
