Plant information: Philodendron x 'Red Congo'

Philodendron Red Congo or also known as Philodendron Rojo Congo, is native to the tropical regions of South America. It produces large leaves for a Philodendron plant. The leaves emerge first with a bright red colour which gradually changes into a beautiful burgundy shade when the leaves mature. In the end all leaves will become dark green of colour. Unlike most Philodendrons, Philodendron Red Congo is not a climber nor producing viny structures, but it still is a fast growing plant. The plant also forms, with the right conditions, interesting flowers that come in different colours (red, white and green) producing a strong odour. Araflora does advise to place it a safe spot away from little children and pets, while Philodendron Red Congo its leaves are toxic when consumed.

Plant care: Philodendron x 'Red Congo'

Like other Philodendrons, Philodendron Red Congo prefers a spot where it receives bright but indirect sunlight. It is rather tolerant to bright conditions, but this will not stimulate its growth. When not only the older leaves but also several young(er) leaves start to yellow/discolour it is an indication that the plant is receiving too much light. Philodendron Red Congo thrives with a temperature between 18 to 25 degrees Celsius during the day and during the night with 15 degrees Celsius. Araflora provides Philodendron Red Congo with a well-draining soil. Allow the soil to slightly dry out at its first few centimetres in-between the water gifts, however make sure to never drench the soil or let it dry out too much. During the active growing months (summer and spring) you can provide Philodendron Red Congo with some regular (well-balanced) water-soluble houseplant fertilizer once a month, do it every two months during autumn and winter. When leaves tend to look pale it means that the plant is short on calcium and/or magnesium. Araflora advises to mist your Philodendron Red Congo every now and then since it will increase its vitality and it prevents pest problems.
