This orchid has a Dali-moustache on its flowers. The picturesque beauty of the flower shouldn't raise any eyebrows if you would be told Restrepia trichoglossa was made by the master himself. Restrepia trichoglossa has slender flowers with an alternating purple and yellow striped pattern. There is a white purple attachment at the front of the flower beautifully contrasting the rest of the flower and it has a hairy tongue.

Restrepia trichoglossa can be found in Panama, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. With its 15 centimetre, it's quite a small orchid. The egg shaped leaves are quite fleshy and each grow from a bulb. The flowers are around 3 centimetre and are very elongated. The lower flower petal is enlarged and has yellow and purple stripes. The lip of Restrepia trichoglossa has a similar pattern, but is smaller. The two flower petals on the side are stringy and are shaped like a cotton bud. The flowers each grow from one flower stem. This is a very special flower!
Restrepia trichoglossa grows best in warm surroundings around 22⁰C. The temperature shouldn't drop below 15⁰C or rise above 30⁰C. A humidity around 80% will stimulate a healthy growth of Restrepia trichoglossa. It should be placed in a light spot, but out of direct sunlight. Water the plant when its substrate has dried slightly. Use rainwater or distilled water to prevent the accumulation of minerals. In practise this will be two to three times a week. Proper airflow combined with a proper humidity will help prevent infections and disease. Orchid-mix will make a suitable substrate. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. Make sure water is able to drain from the pot. Old flowers can be cut from the plant.
