Renanthera imschootiana - Orchid238

This orchid originates from Southeast Asia and produces a lot of fragrant flowers. Almost all of the flowers blossom at the same time and have a deep red colour. Unlike many orchids, Renanthera imschootiana doesn't have one large petal at the bottom of the flower, but two. In the wild Renanthera imschootiana grows up along trees and plants, so should be supported in the same way at home.

Plant information: Orchid 'Renanthera imschootiana'

Renanthera imschootiana can be found in Northern India, South China, Laos and Vietnam in wet lowland forests. The orchid produces deep red flowers with light yellow spots with a light fruity fragrance. Dozens blossom at a time from 45 centimetre flower stalks from the top of the stalk. The lip is rather small. The petals, especially the bottom two, result in the 6 centimetre size of the flower. The stem of Renanthera imschootiana is like a vine and can even be like wood in parts in adult specimens. It still needs to be supported in many cases. The leaves of the orchid are spoon shaped and alternate from the stem.

Plant care: Orchid 'Renanthera imschootiana'

Due to its origin Renanthera imschootiana can be cultivated at lower temperatures. This orchid is able to grow at 15⁰C. The ideal temperature is around 20⁰C. Don't let the temperature drop below 10⁰C or rise above 25⁰C. Renanthera imschootiana needs a humidity of around 80%. Put the orchid in a spot that is not too light, in semi-shade. Avoid direct sunlight to prevent it from drying out. For the best results, water it with rainwater or distilled water whenever the substrate is slightly dry. In practice this will be two to four times a week. Proper airflow will help prevent infections and disease. Orchid-mix will be a suitable substrate. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. Make sure moisture is able to drain from it. If your orchid gets too big, feel free to prune it. You can fertilize Renanthera imschootiana in moderation on warm days to stimulate its blossoming.
