Pleurothallis orbicularis is found in the wild in Bolivia, Peru, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Colombia, Nicaragua and Panama at altitudes between 180 and 1.500 meters. This tiny plant grows upon trees. The leaves have found some sort of collaboration with the flowers. They grow from the same stem and serve as a sort of background for the flowers. One side of the leaves has the same purple colour as the flowers, while the other side is green. The flowers have elongated petals and don't get any bigger than 2,5 centimetre. Pleurothallis orbicularis blossoms during winter.
Pleurothallis orbicularis isn't hard to take care of. Due to its widespread habitat, it can be cultivated at temperatures between 14⁰C and 22⁰C. Make sure the temperature doesn't drop below 10⁰C or rise above 30⁰C, as this could prove to be more than it can handle. The humidity should ideally be around 80%. Unlike other orchids, this species needs a shade rich spot. Water Pleurothallis orbicularis every week and spray with water daily. Use rainwater or distilled water to prevent the accumulation of minerals in the roots. A proper airflow is important to prevent infections and disease. Pleurothallis orbicularis can be kept in a pot with orchid-mix, or attached to a piece of bark or wood. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. You can add plant nutrition when needed. Old flowers can be cut from the plant.
