The name of this orchid already tells us where it originally came from, Costa Rica. Pleurothallis costaricense can also be found in Panama. It is usually a small plant of around 10 centimetre, but Araflora offers a larger version of Pleurothallis costaricense. The flowers of the orchid have the shape of the bill of a duck and carry the beautiful combination of yellow and purple colours.

Not the lip, but the flower petals give Pleurothallis costaricense its beautiful and unique appearance. These have a curved shape and are positioned across from one another, like the shell of a pistachio. They are yellow with purple veins or shading towards the middle of the flower. A plant can grow multiple flower stalks, each carrying multiple flowers. The leaves of Pleurothallis costaricense are slightly spoon shaped and usually have a length of around 5 centimetre. This orchid is naturally found in Panama and Costa Rica at altitudes between 650 and 1.800 meters. The version Araflora offers here is larger than this, so you can enjoy this beautiful orchid even more.
Pleurothallis costaricense isn't hard to take care of. Due to the widespread habitat the orchid can be kept at a temperature between 14⁰C and 22⁰C. Temperatures below 10⁰C and above 30⁰C can be too much for the orchid. The humidity should be around 80%. In contrast to many other orchids, this one flourishes in a spot with a lot of shade. Water Pleurothallis costaricense every week and spray daily with a light sprinkle from a plant spray. Use rainwater or distilled water to prevent the accumulation of minerals. Proper airflow combined with a proper humidity will help prevent infections and disease. Pleurothallis costaricense can be kept in a pot with orchid-mix or attached to a piece of bark of wood. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. You can add plant nutrition when needed. Old flower stems can be cut from the plant.
