Plant information: Orchid 'Neolauchea pulchella 'Isabelia pulchella'

There are two names circulating for the Brazilian orchid: ‘Neolauchea pulchella’ and ‘Isabelia pulchella’. The first is the old name that is actually not accurate anymore, but is still used frequently. The second one (literally: 'Beautiful Isabel') is the name that the plant received in 1968, when, after new research, it had turned out that the plant belongs to the 'Isabelia' genus. The flowers of the Neolauchea pulchella are 1,5 to 2 cm big and have a deep pink color. Water and nutrition for the flowers comes from reservoirs on the bark. Because in the wild the orchid grows on trees, the nutrition that the orchid uses comes mostly from tree bark.

Plant care: Orchid 'Neolauchea pulchella 'Isabelia pulchella'

The Neolauchea pulchella grows optimally when it is tied up to a piece of tree bark or Vern. The air ought to be humid but well circulated. The orchid requires a lot of light and night temperatures between 14 and 24 degrees Celsius. Day temperatures may be 5 degrees higher. To keep the roots dry during the night, it is best to water the plant in the morning. Re-potting or reattaching the plant to new bark can damage the plant. Therefore, make sure the plant can remain in the same spot for at least 5 years. Sufficient room to grow is crucial to this plant.
