Masdevallia abbreviata grows on trees on the hillsides of Peruvian and Ecuadorian mountain ranges, at altitudes ranging from 1500 to 2800 m. In these regions night temperatures average 16-20 degrees Celsius. The flowers are white with red spots and have a distinctive sweet-spicy fragrance. The amount of red spots varies between one plant and the next.
Masdevallia abbreviata requires a steady supply of water, especially during flowering. Make sure the soil contstantly stays moist. Adding sphagnum (a kind of moss) can help to achieve this. The orchid prefers cooler temperatures and likes to be well ventilated. When moved from a cool spot to a warmer place, the orchid will often start blossoming. Masdevallia abbreviata grows optimally with an average night temperature of 16 to 20 degrees Celsius. During the day the temperature may rise to be 5 degrees higher.
