Lycaste aromatica is found in the wild at altitudes between 500 and 2.000 meters in Nicaragua, Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador. The orchid grows upon trees and rocks. There will be around ten heavily and pleasantly scented flowers growing from the plant. They are yellow and are quite closed compared to other orchids. The middle flower petals and the lip protrude to the front. In the middle of these petals you will find some hairs and spots. The flower stems grow from so-called pseudo bulbs. Bulbs in which the plant stores nutrients and water. The leaves have a pointy shape and grow almost directly from the roots. In its period of rest Lycaste aromatica sheds these leaves.
In nature Lycaste aromatica is found in mountainous regions, which is why this species can handle lower temperatures than other orchids. During the day 20⁰C is ideal, dropping to 8⁰C at night. Temperatures below 5⁰C or above 25⁰C are more than this orchid can handle. This orchid needs a lot of light, but should always be kept out of direct sunlight to prevent it from drying out. The humidity should be around 80% and slightly higher during the night. Give Lycaste aromatica plenty of rainwater or distilled water while it is blossoming and less in its period of rest, when the leaves have been shed. A proper airflow is important to prevent infections and disease. Lycaste aromatica can be kept in a pot with shredded bark or attached to a piece of bark with moss. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. Fertilize once a month. Old flowers can be cut from the plant.
