Gongora species - Orchid284

The flowers of this orchid from the Gongora-species look like the mouth of a snake. The petals are shaped like semicircles with protrusions towards the middle. They are yellow with a beautiful spotted red pattern. It is not known which type this is exactly, but it is probably Gongora pardina from Ecuador. And this Gongora has a fragrance as lovely as its appearance.

Plant information: Orchid 'Gongora species.'

Gongora-species are found in the wild in Central America and South America. We can't say for sure, but the appearance of this plant that Araflora offers looks very much like Gongora pardina. The flowers have an extremely unique appearance. They grow in clusters of 10 at a time from the long flower stem. The thick flower petals are yellow with red spots. They have been fused in such a way that the original orchid pattern is hardly recognizable. The leaves grow in sets of two from the thick parts at the base of the orchid. The plant grows to approximately 40 centimetre.

Plant care: Orchid 'Gongora species.'

This Gongora-species needs a temperature around 22⁰C. Make sure the temperature doesn't drop below 10⁰C or rise above 30⁰C. This orchid needs to be kept in a semi-light spot while blossoming. During winter it is advisable to move it to a slightly lighter spot. Right before blossoming, move the plant to a slightly darker spot. This will extend the time you can enjoy the flowers. Water the orchid multiple times a week during its blossoming. Use rainwater or distilled water to prevent the accumulation of minerals in the roots. The humidity should be around 80%. Proper airflow will help prevent infections and disease. Orchid-mix will make a suitable substrate for Gongora. It is also possible to attach Gongora to a piece of bark, but then the roots should be sprinkled often with a plant spray to keep them moist. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. Add plant nutrition in moderation. Old flowers can be cut from the orchid.
