Dendrobium heokhuii is a remarkable orchid from Kalimantan and Malaysia, which grows on sea level in tropical forests. From the base, several egg-shaped pseudobulbs are formed. From the pseudobulbs, long pendant leafs are formed which are rounded-elliptical and succulent. Opposite of each leaf, a short flower stalk is formed, carrying a single, tube-shaped flower. The pendant flowers are around 1.5 centimeters and are bright white in color. The inner tepals show fine purple striations. The labellum shines with a golden to yellow color pattern. This species flowers over longer periods of time; multiple flowers form successively. Older plants could reach a significant size over time and could grow out to a real specimen if cared for the right way. This species is most often propagated by division. Only divide mature species with at least three healthy pseudobulbs per plant part.
Dendrobium heokhuii grows naturally as an epiphyte on mossy branches of tropical trees. It prefers warm conditions of temperatures between 23 and 30 degrees Celsius. To encourage growth, let the temperature drop some degrees at night. Make sure humidity is around 70%. Higher humidity favors faster growth. Allow for excellent ventilation. The ideal potting media is an airy mix for epiphytes and could consist of sphagnum moss and medium sized bark pieces for the larger part. Place this plant in bright indirect light. Water this species regularly in the growing season which lasts normally from spring till summer. It is possible to let the medium dry out in between waterings in winter and store it in a cooler place. Fertilize this species weekly with a recommended dosage of specialized orchid fertilizer.
