Plant information: Orchid 'Angraecum scottianum'

Angraecum scottianum is found on the Comoros islands near the east coast of Africa above Madagascar. The plant grows there upon other plants and trees in a warm environment at altitudes around 450 meters. The leaves of Angraecum scottianum are around 10 centimetre and have a round needle shape, making them hard to distinguish from the slightly lighter green stem. The flowers have a large snow white flower petal and four smaller pointy greenish white petals. The diameter of the flower is around 6 centimetre, but it carries an impressive nectar tube of 15 centimetre. The nectar is hidden at the bottom of it, so it will be no surprise that it is pollinated by insects with very long tongues, like moths. The flower of Angraecum scottianum smells sweetish and grow from a flower stem of around 15 centimetre, opening up one at a time.

Plant care: Orchid 'Angraecum scottianum'

Angraecum scottianum is one of the easier Angraecum-species and is used to a temperature during the day of 25⁰C and during the night of 15⁰C. Make sure the temperature doesn't drop below 10⁰C or rise above 30⁰C. This orchid needs to be placed in a light spot and can even endure direct sunlight, as long as it's not at noon. Water this orchid daily during its blossoming with rainwater or distilled water, making sure the roots can dry in between watering. In this period of blossoming you should also be spraying them with water. During winter you should water two times a week. A humidity of 60% stimulates a healthy growth of flowers. Angraecum scottianum can be cultivated attached to a piece of bark, but also in a pot with orchid-mix. You can find this and other components in our ‘Plant Accessories’ section. In any case it is important water can drain from it to prevent infections and mold. But a proper airflow is also an important preventative measure. You can fertilize Angraecum scottianum every week, as long as it is in small amounts. Old flowers can be cut from the plant. The stem of the orchid should be supported while it is growing.
