Aerangis spiculata was originally discovered by nurseryman and naturalist L. Humbolt in the Comoros and described at the beginning of the 20th century by Finet as ‘Rhaphidorhynchus spiculatus’. It grows epiphytically in moist evergreen forests up to 1000 m elevation. Plants are stout with thick roots and 2-7 thick grey-green leaves with wavy and somehow reddish margins, which can be 10-17 cm long and up to 5 cm wide. Flower stems of Aerangis spiculata can be up to 75 cm long, hanging and carrying 12-20 white (tinged with pink on the edges), fragrant flowers about 4-5 cm in diameter, that look like birds flying from the side. Aerangis spiculata flowers in winter. This is an orchid for terraria where the extra humidity will be of great benefit, however it can be rewarding in pots too. For additional plant information for this special orchid see the Araflora plantsymbols.
Aerangis spiculata occurs naturally in wet forests and low altitudes. It is an orchid that likes warm conditions all year with a small drop of temperature at night. Around 21-25 C at day and 18-20 C at night are perfect for it. Grow in shade without any direct sunlight. This orchid prefers humid conditions and grows better when watered when it is not quite dry. Aerangis spiculata can grow easily mounted on a cork in a humid terrarium with some sphagnum around the roots. Provisions should be made to be enough so that the long flower stem has space to grow. Pots filled with coarse sized bark, or a bark and sphagnum mixture can be also used. Fertilizing every 15 days with a high nitrogen water soluble fertilizer diluted in half the normal concentration during the growing season (mainly mid-spring and summer) is highly beneficial.
