Aerangis brachycarpa was discovered by Richard in the mountains of Ethiopia and described initially as 'Dendrobium brachycarpum' from a rather poor-quality specimen. It is an epiphytic orchid that grows in dense shade at bases of tree trunks or sometime bushes, in highland forests of central and central east Africa, on altitudes of 1500-2300 m. These orchids are robust, with 4-12 dark green ridged leaves with dark spots that can be up to 25 cm long. Aerangis brachycarpa has short stems with up to 12 stary fragrant long-spurred flowers, that open green and turn white with a pinkish tinge with time. Flowers are about 4 cm in diameter. Flowering occurs usually in spring to summer with sometimes a second occurring around November. Being a shade plant from high altitudes is a consideration for growing it and terrarium culture suits it provided it is not close to the light source. Because it is occurring on high altitudes as an epiphytic orchid, Aerangis brachycarpa is easy to grow provided some care. Medium warm temperatures around 20-25 °C at daytime and 15-20 °C at night are required. It should not dry completely between waterings. Aerangis brachycarpa is best grown in shade and moderate air humidity. It is suitable for a terrarium where it can be mounted away from the light sources and will develop beautiful silvery thick roots, away from sunlight. This orchid is also suitable for pot or basket culture using coarse sized bark or a bark-sphagnum mixture. Fertilizing every 15 days with a high nitrogen water soluble fertilizer diluted in half the normal concentration during the growing season (mainly mid-spring and summer) is highly beneficial.
