The Heliconia stricta with its large, green leaves and spectacular flowers is a tropical plant native to tropical South America. The flowers develop into large, flat pillars with always on the right and on the left a flower. Those flowers are flame-shaped and orange, hence the name ‘Olympic flame’. This is not only a beautiful, exotic plant indoors but also outdoors in summer on a balcony or terrace. The Heliconia stricta is native tropical South America.
The Heliconia stricta likes a light spot in your home or at the office. In summer it will also thrive on a balcony or terrace but the plant should not constantly be in direct sunlight. The soil mix of this Helconia species must always stay moist. Take care that the temperature stays between 10°Celsius [50°F] and 30°Celsius [86°F]. The substrate for the Heliconia stricta ‘ Olympic Flame’ should be permeable and contain sufficient nutrition. Adding a little fertilizer once a month will help the Heliconia stricta to develop fully. Araflora sells many types of soil mixes also ones suitable for the Heliconia stricta.
