The spectacular Paint Brush Lily, Haemanthus coccineus, is a bulbous plant and related to the Amaryllis. Both the undersides of the leaves and the stem usually show red markings, making this plant beautiful even without the spectacular red flower or "tassel" that looks like a big red brush.

The flower emerges first in the Haemanthus coccineus, then after a while two or three large, oval leaves appear, and after fertilization white to deep pink translucent berries. Haemanthus coccineus is an exotic plant from the south of Africa. Its scientific name means "scarlet blood flower." In Latin Coccineus means "scarlet" and haemanthus comes from Greek and means "blood flower".
Keep the Haemanthus coccineus bulb dry during its rest period. When the plant starts to grow, water regularly. Place in a partially shady location.
