Fockea edulis belongs to the Apocynaceae family and naturally occurs in the arid regions of South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana. In the wild, the plant grows partly underground, where the thick caudex (tuberous stem) serves as a water reservoir to survive long periods of drought.
The name edulis means “edible” – referring to the tuber that was traditionally used as a food source by indigenous peoples. The plant produces long, slender vines with small oval leaves, and in summer it bears small white-green flowers. Care for Fockea edulis: Although Fockea edulis looks exotic, it is quite easy to care for: Light: Place the plant in a bright spot with plenty of indirect sunlight. In summer, it can be placed outdoors, protected from harsh midday sun. Watering: Water sparingly and allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During the dormant period (winter), water very little. Temperature: Ideal temperature is between 18–28°C. Protect from cold and frost. Soil: Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix, optionally combined with pumice or perlite. Repotting: Only when necessary, usually every few years. The caudex can be left partially above the soil for a decorative effect. With the right care, Fockea edulis will slowly develop into an impressive plant – a true eye-catcher for lovers of unique succulents.
