Plant information: Congo cockatoo

Impatiens niamniamensis is a tropical species from the balsam family. This plant could be grown as a houseplant or as a large container plant outdoors. The species could grow to a length of two meters, but normally stays between 70 to 100 cm in height. The fibrous, glass-like stems carry multiple simple oval leaves. In between leaves, multiple bright colored flowers could occur. Flowers reach up to 3 cm in size and are bright red and yellow. The shape of the flower resembles the beak of a parrot. In nature, this species is pollinated by small birds. When mature, the seed capsules disperse the seeds with explosive strength. This species is considered perennial and could be propagated by seeds.

Plant care: Congo cockatoo

Impatiens niamniamensis occurs on forest floors of tropical Africa. This species is mostly grown under temperatures between 12 and 30 degrees Celsius. Colder temperatures are presumably tolerated but they are not frost tolerant. The plant could be grown in a warm location indoors or in large containers outside, when temperature allows. This plant does not require a high humidity. Place this plant on a spot with bright indirect light. Direct sunlight in the morning or evening is recommended; prevent direct mid-day sun. The soil should be humus rich, airy and moist retaining. Water frequently, do not let the soil become bone dry in between waterings but do net water sit in the bottom of the pot. Fertilize this plant regularly. Use fertilizer for flowering plants every two weeks at the recommended strength.
