The Bromelia species Brocchinia reducta is a very special carnivorous plant. It is one of the three species Bromelia that has evolved in such a way that it can catch and digest insects. The carnivorous Bromelia plants are the Brocchinia hechtioides and the Catopsis berteroniana. All in all a most intriguing plant from the Gran Sabana in Venezuela, where it does not grow as an epiphyte but in the soil. This Araflora plant is not for consumption.
The Brocchinia reducta needs a great deal of light and can be grown in the full sun. The outside temperature in winter should be above 5˚ Celsius [41˚F]. Water the plant from above, so that the water will find its way into the cup. Do not leave the plant for too long with its roots in water. The Brocchinia reducta needs a permeable potting soil with only few nutrients. Araflora uses a mixture of peat and perlite for its cultivation.
