Plant information: Bladderwort 'Utricularia pubescens' 'Serra araca'

Utricularia pubescens is a small carnivorous plant from the bladderwort family. It consists of multiple underground stems containing occasional leaves. Leaves grow just above the soil and are round to peltate, with a maximum length of half a centimeter. From the stems, several bladders could grow that could catch small animals. At the end of the stems slender flower stalks could form. Flower stalks reach a variable length and carry a single, remarkable flower. The faint-purple to white flowers consist of a notable lower tepal what could show a yellow eyespot. The rest of the flower contains a smaller upper, purple petal and a lighter core. Propagating this plant could be done by dividing plant clusters or by sowing.

Plant care: Bladderwort 'Utricularia pubescens' 'Serra araca'

Utricularia pubescens originally grows marshes and swamps in India, Africa, South- and Central America. This tropical plant grows very wet terrestrially or on constantly wet rocks. The optimal temperature range for cultivating this species is between 18 to 30 degrees Celsius. Place this plant on a bright spot, direct sunlight is tolerated well. Use a soil mix that consists of peat or sand for the most part. Never let the soil go dry, preferably place the pot in a shallow bowl of water. This will also ensure the right humidity for this plant. The use of tap water is discouraged; always use rainwater or water deficient of any minerals. This plant does not need any fertilizer.
