Begonia peltata - Begonia53
Begonia peltata - Begonia53
This species is known as the ‘fuzzy leaf begonia’ because of the many soft hairs attached to its leaves. The leaves are almost perfectly round with a stem in the middle of each leaf. Flower stems between the leaves each bear a spray of more than ten blooms at any one time. Begonia peltata is ideally suited to a terrarium.

Begonia peltata is endemic to southern Mexico and Honduras where the climate is fairly warm. Stems bearing felt-like leaves covered in hairs can be 50 centimetres long. It produces numerous flowers with two large and two small tepals on long flower stems with a cluster of yellow stamens or a yellow pistil at the heart of each flower.
Begonia peltata is quite easy to grow. It needs to be kept in partial shade where the temperature is always above 10⁰C but never higher than 30⁰C. Ambient humidity needs to be around 70% during the daytime and 90% at night. The growing medium must be kept moist, for example by placing moss around the base of the plant. Feeding once or twice a month will promote healthy growth. If the plant is grown in a terrarium, good air circulation will help to prevent sickness and disease. Details of the mixture of peat and perlite which form an ideal growing medium along with information about other useful products can be found in ‘Plant Accessories’. If Begonia peltata becomes too big it can be pruned.
