Begonia komoensis - Begonia107

Just like many other species, this begonia comes from western Africa where there is a tropical climate. Begonia komoensis is an epiphytic species, which means that it grows on other plants and trees. The species has firm long leaves that bear a deep green color. The stem of Begonia komoensis turns red in many cases. Several red flowers come from this stem.

Plant information: Begonia komoensis

Begonia komoensis is found in the West African countries Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The species can grow up to two meters and seeks support from other trees and plants. This is done by means of a solid red stalk. Leaves that are symmetrical grow on this stem. This makes it different from many other begonias. Begonia komoensis has four red petals that in many cases have a beautifully contrasting white border. A bundle of striking yellow stamens can be seen in the center of the male flowers. With the female flowers this is a crown-shaped stigma

Plant care: Begonia komoensis

Begonia komoensis needs an average amount of light to grow well and is ideal for a terrrarium with a temperate climate. Make sure that the plant is not in direct sunlight. The plant needs a temperature of above 10⁰C and below 30⁰C. Ideally, however, it is between 20-25⁰C. A humidity of around 70% during the day and about 80% at night is sufficient. Allow the soil to dry slightly before watering again. Good air circulation in a terrarium helps to prevent diseases and infections. It is recommended to use a mix of peat and perlite as the substrate. We offer several of these mixes in our "plant accessories" section. It is wise to guide the somewhat fragile stems or to let them hang from a raised pot. You can safely prune the stems if they become too long. Give Begonia komoensis a small amount of plant food once or twice a month if you think it is necessary.
