Begonia gehrtii - Begonia50

This shrub begonia from Brazil has highly unusual leaves that look as if they have just been polished. They have a bumpy surface and a cobweb pattern of veins resembling a bird’s eye view of a mountain range. The light green veins are the valleys running between the mountains. The plant’s white flowers also have a special feature in the form of spiral-shaped pistils. Begonia gehrtii does not need much maintenance in order ...

to grow successfully.

Plant care: Begonia gehrtii

Begonia gehrtii is quite easy to grow, either in a terrarium or as a potted houseplant. It must always have plenty of light but it will lose its leaves if exposed to strong light such as direct sunlight. Begonia gehrtii can withstand temperatures as low as 10⁰C, but is best kept at between 20 and 25⁰C. The potting compound must remain moist between waterings and must not be allowed to dry out. A high level of humidity is not essential – 60% is perfectly acceptable. It can be fertilised once or twice a month with a small amount of plant food in order to promote growth. A peat-based mixture with perlite is the best kind of growing medium. Go to “plant accessories” for more information about this and other useful products. Begonia gehrtii can be pruned if it becomes too big.
