Begonia dregei - Begonia60
Begonia dregei - Begonia60
This rare variety takes its name from, J.F. Drège (1794-1881), a German horticulturist and plant collector who discovered it in South Africa near the Cape of Good Hope. Begonia dregei has a swollen stem base known as a caudex from which it produces leaf stalks and reddish green leaves. It is easy to cultivate and produces white blooms with bright yellow stamens or pistils.

The leaves of Begonia dregei are lightly serated and green on top and red underneath. They have two large and two small tepals together with a cluster of stamens or a curled pistil at the centre, both of which are bright yellow. Begonia dregei is found exclusively in South Africa. It reaches a height of roughly 30 centimetres.
Coming from a relatively temperate climate, Begonia dregei requires a cool to warm terrarium and a reasonably humid atmosphere. The temperature should be around 22⁰C but never less than 10⁰C or more than 30⁰C. Humidity needs to be 60% during the daytime and 80% at night. The potting mixture must not be allowed to dry out. A dish placed under the pot containing a modicum of water will help. Sphagnum moss round the base of the plant will also keep the growing medium moist. The best potting compound consists of a mixture of peat and perlite. See the section entitled ‘Plant accessories’ for more information. Begonia dregei can be fertilised twice a month with plant food and can be pruned if it becomes bigger than originally intended.
