Begonia decora is distinctive because of the many red hairs on its leaves. The broad, bright green veins form a striking contrast with the rest of the leaf. Begonia decora is a tropical species from the rain forests of the Malaysian mainland. It has a cluster of striking stamens or pistils at the centre of its white flowers.
Begonia decora is easy to cultivate. Like many begonias, it thrives on plenty of light but must not be exposed to direct sunlight. The best temperature for this species is 22⁰C with daytime humidity of around 70% rising to 90% at night. The growing medium must not be allowed to dry out. If necessary place the pot in a dish containing tepid (lukewarm) water. In a terrarium, moss helps to retain moisture. Begonia decora likes needs to be fed with fertiliser 2 or 3 times a month. A peat-based mixture with peat and perlite makes an ideal growing compound. See “Plant accessories” for more details of this and other aids to cultivation. Begonia decora is suitable for pruning.
