Discovered in 2011 by Patricke Blanc, Begonia blancii seems to occur in different in a variety of forms. One has black leaves, another green leaves and a third has green leaves with black patches. Like other species of begonia, Begonia blancii has male and female flowers on the same plant. The stamens and pistils are a highly distinctive because of their large size and yellow colour.
Begonia blancii requires relatively little in order to grow successfully. It is best cultivated in a terrarium in partial shade away from direct sunlight. The ideal temperature is between 22⁰C and 27⁰C but must never drop below 12⁰C. The growing medium must not be allowed to dry out between waterings so give it lukewarm water as and when necessary. Humidity needs to be between 60% and 80% during the daytime and 90% at night. Begonia blancii can be given a small amount of plant food once or twice a month. The best potting mix is one that combines peat and perlite which you can look up and buy in the section entitled “Plant accessories” in addition to many other essential items for your plant collection.
