Anthurium obtusum , sometimes synonymous with Anthurium trinerve, is an Anthurium with fairly leathery, oval leaves. It is a shrub-like Anthurium that flourishes outside in warmer climates. However, in north-west Europe it needs to be kept indoors either as a potted houseplant or in a terrarium.

Plant information: Anthurium obtusum

Anthurium obtusum normally grows in trees in Central America and the north of South America. Anthuriums are often epiphytic and terrestrial, meaning they can grow on trees and on the ground. That is why they are sometimes called semi or half epiphytic. They usually start on the ground and then climb when an opportunity presents itself. The word ‘obtusum’ means ‘blunt’, which may well refer to the shape of its leaves. Originally, the plant was called Anthurium until it became apparent that the name was already in use and therefore changed to ‘Anthurium obtusum’. If plants become too big, they can be pruned without problems.

Plant care: Anthurium obtusum

Anthurium obtusum likes bright light but not direct sunlight. Keep the potting mix slightly moist. Water regularly, but in small quantities so that the potting mix stays moist rather than soaking wet. Anthurium obtusum is an exotic plant that like most Anthuriums enjoys a fair level of humidity. It therefore needs misting once a week. It enjoys temperatures between 10 and 30 degrees. If so desired, feed it during the growing season with a small quantity of plant fertiliser. For the potting mix, use 50% ordinary potting compost mixed with 50% orchid mix or perlite.
