Lecanopteris sinuosa 'B' - Antf10
Lecanopteris sinuosa 'B' - Antf10
Lecanopteris sinuosa is a myrmecophyte or ant plant meaning it has a mutually beneficial relationship with certain types of ants. The plant provides the ants with a safe and secure nest site. The ants fertilise the plant with nutrients by leaving behind waste and other discarded refuse in its rhizome. Lecanopteris sinuosa produces attractive, feather-shaped leaves.

In its natural habitat, Lecanopteris sinuosa has a mutualistic relationship with different types of ants, benefitting both the ants and the plant. The ants live in the fern’s hollow rhizome and in return, provide the plant with nutrients. Lecanopteris sinuosa does not necessarily need ants in order to grow. Young plants have solid rhizomes, but later cavities appear creating hollow spaces in which ants can nest. Lecanopteris sinuosa is found throughout South-east Asia and the Philippines where it grows as an epiphyte on trees. Like other ferns, Lecanopteris sinuosa does not produce flowers, but rather forms spores on the undersides of its leaves. Araflora supplies a fern of manageable size that will gradually develop into an impressive mature plant.
Although Lecanopteris sinuosa prefers a warm temperature and a high level of humidity, it also flourishes in less ideal growing conditions. The best temperature is around 25⁰ C – certainly no lower than 10⁰ C or higher than 35⁰ C – with humidity of around 80%. It needs watering only when the potting mix is dry, in order to prevent rotting. Orchid mix fertilised from time to time makes a good substrate. Ant plants respond very well to fertiliser. Good air circulation is essential as is a well-lit location away from direct sunlight.
