Alocasia gageana has its home in the mysterious tropical forests of south-east Asia. Its roots are eaten locally as a staple food. The spectacular leaves are bright green, attracting attention by virtue of their impressive size. The white flower is formed in summer and is often hidden behind the plant’s foliage. It is certainly worth discovering this “white pearl”. This species is smaller than many other varieties of elephant ear plant.
Alocasia gageana is best cultivated in a room with plenty of light, but must not be exposed to direct sunlight which would burn the leaves. It can be grown outside in summer; provided it is brought inside again once the temperature drops below. Room temperature is ideal. It is advisable not to place Alocasia gageana too close to heating which would dry out the atmosphere and reduce humidity. A good way of making sure the air is not too dry is to place the pot in a dish of water with pebbles. The potting mix consisting of ordinary compost must never be too wet and must be allowed to dry out before the plant is watered again. In summer, Alocasia gageana can be fertilised twice a month. It is best to remove damaged leaves as quickly as possible to prevent disease.
