Sarracenia x smoorii is a more compact cultivar from the North-American carnivorous pitcher plants from the Sarracenia genus. Insects are attracted by the sugars produced by glands within the pitchers, because they think it is nectar. Because of the small hairs and the waxy layer at the inside of the pitchers the insects have a hard time escaping out of the pitchers. The hoods will make sure the insects definitely cannot escape anymore. The hoods of Sarracenia x smoorii are really distinctive from other Sarracenia plants, because they have a magnificent wavy rim. The pitchers have an impressive orange red colouration and the more sunlight the plant receives the more intense the colouration will be according to Araflora. A big advantage of the Sarracenia species is that they are hardy plants to more or lesser extent.
While Sarracenia x smoorii is a hardy plant it can also be kept near a pond or in a vegetable garden besides that it can be kept as an indoor plant. It is advised to cover the plants with hay during a period of frost or when snowing, put a little extra snow on the plants. It is of utmost importance that Sarracenia species never dry out and therefore it is preferred to keep them on a bed of water. Sarracenia x smoorii needs a nutrient poor soil, Araflora therefore uses a mix of peat, sand and perlite. Leaves that have turned brown might be cut off since they serve no function any longer. Sarracenia species do not like water with a high lime content, therefore you will make the plants happy by giving them rainwater instead of tap water. Sarracenia x smoorii really loves sunlight and will be weaken due to a shortage of light, make sure to keep it in a sunny spot.
