Sarracenia x purpurea hybrid C is a cultivar from the North-American carnivorous pitcher plants from the Sarracenia genus. The hoods of the pitchers are curved around the aperture of the pitchers. On the inside of the pitcher glands produces sugars that attract insects that think it is nectar. Once the insects are inside there is no way back, because they will be stuck due to the little hairs and waxy substance that covers the inside. The pitchers have a nice green colour with remarkable red veins. Araflora experienced that the more exposure to sunlight the higher the intensity of the colouration will be. Sarracenia purpurea is considered to be one of the most hardy pitcher species. Sarracenia purpurea has been introduced years ago and is already occurring naturally for many years in swamps in Switzerland, Ireland, England and Scotland. Another fun fact is that native Americans used Sarracenia purpurea for several different medicinal purposes like treatment of fevers and colds.
Because Sarracenia x purpurea hybrid C is one the most hardy pitcher plants it can be kept as an indoor plant and it can be kept around a pond or a vegetable garden. However, during a severe frost period it won’t harm the plant to cover it with a bit of hay or when snowing, put some extra snow on them, in order to benefit survival. Sarracenia x purpurea hybrid C loves sunlight and shortage of light can weaken the plant, it can also thrive during a period of heat. It is crucial for Sarracenia species to never dry out, therefore it can be best kept on a bed of water. While Sarracenia species don’t like water with a high calcium content, they prefer rain water over tap water. Sarracenia x purpurea hybrid C requires a nutrient poor soil, Araflora therefore uses a mix of peat, sand and perlite. Leaves that have turned brown might be cut off since they serve no function any longer.
