Sarracenia x farnhamii is a cultivar of the North-American carnivorous pitcher plants from the Sarracenia genus. Insects are attracted by the sugars formed in the pitchers and they will be trapped in the pitchers after which the hoods will ensure that the insects can’t escape anymore. The fact that Sarracenia x farnhamii is a cultivar can be seen in the way it is coloured and the shape of its pitchers. The influences from Sarracenia rubra can be seen in the more slender pitchers and the tendency of the pitchers to clump and to form more pitchers. It has it’s white spots, nice red colours and the more ruffled hood from Sarracenia leucophylla. Araflora thinks it is a big advantage of plants from the Sarracenia genus that they are all hardy plants to a more or lesser extent.

Sarracenia x farnhamii loves sunlight and shortage of sunlight can weaken the plant, besides it can also handle heat. While Sarracenia x farnhamii is hardy species it can also be kept nearby a pond or in a vegetable garden. It can sustain severe frost as long as it is covered with hay or when it is snowing, put a little extra snow on the plants. It is crucial for Sarracenia species that they never dry out and therefore they can be best kept on a bed of water. Sarracenia x farnhamii requires a nutrient poor soil, Araflora therefore uses a mix of peat, sand and perlite. Leaves that have turned brown might be cut off since they serve no function any longer. While tap water mostly has a high calcium content which Sarracenia species don’t like it is advised to use rainwater instead.
