Sarracenia x Ewelina is a low-growing cultivar from the North-American carnivorous pitcher plants from the Sarracenia genus. The pitchers of Sarracenia x Ewelina are beautifully red orange with dark red veins. Araflora experienced that the more sunlight the plant receives the stronger the colouration will be. Sarracenia x Ewelina normally flowers between March and May before the pitcher are completely developed, the flowers are also reddish-orange and have strong odour. Glands within the pitchers produce sugars that are confused for nectar by insects, in this way the insects are trapped in the pitchers. They are almost not able to escape anymore due to the tiny hairs and the waxy inner surface of the pitchers. An advantage of the Sarracenia genus is that the plants are hardy plants to a more or lesser extent.
While Sarracenia x Ewelina is a hardy plant it can be kept outside in a moistures area like near a pond or in vegetable garden. It is crucial that Sarracenia species never dry out, therefore it is advised to keep Sarracenia x Ewelina on a bed of water. Moreover, it is advised to cover the plant with a bit of hay during a frost period or when snowing, put a little extra snow on the plant, in order to survive the frost period. Sarracenia x Ewelina doesn’t like lime rich water, therefore you will make the plant happy by supplying it rainwater instead of tap water. Sarracenia species need a nutrient poor soil, Araflora therefore uses a mix of peat, sand and perlite. Brown coloured leaves can be removed since they serve no function any longer.
