Trumpet pitcher plant flava var. rugelii Sarracennia flava var.rugelii) is an American pitcher plant and belongs to a special family of carnivorous plants from the US and Canada. The cup-shaped snares of the Sarracennia flava var. rugelii are long and slim and in the wild they can sometimes reach to about a metre high. Depending on the type of subspecies of the Sarracenia flava their colour is yellow, reddish-brown or green. The inside of the snare is smooth, so insects that drop in, cannot climb up again against its sides. On the bottom of the snare is a layer of acid liquid with digestive enzymes, in which the insect drowns and is digested. Above the snare hangs an immobile lid, which serves as an umbrella preventing the snare being flooded by rain water. The lid is also an excellent landing site for the prey of this plant.
