The name of this plant derives from the blood-red pitchers that form at the end of its leaves. The pitcher cups can grow up to 30 centimetres. Nepenthes sanguinea is a large and vigorous species of pitcher plant, native to peninsular Malaysia and southernmost Thailand. It can grow to a height of several metres if it is allowed to form lianas – the climbing vines found throughout tropical rainforests. If not it will grow in the form of a rosette. The pitchers of Nepenthes sanguinea are a deep red colour. When it blooms, Nepenthes sanguinea produces clusters of yellowish brown flowers that may appear all year round.

Nepenthes sanguinea likes a great deal of sunlight, but not direct sunlight or it will become dehydrated. The best temperature to cultivate this species is between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, certainly no lower than 10 degrees Celsius or higher than 30 degrees. It should be watered regularly with rainwater or distilled water, sprayed with water at regular intervals and kept in an environment with a high level of humidity. The best growing medium is neutral to slightly acidic peat. No additional feeding in the form of plant food is required.
