The pitchers of this carnivorous plant can take a variety of forms since Nepenthes maxima occurs naturally in areas with varying degrees of humidity. The pitchers can be narrow and long or short and round. Features they have in common are purple patches and protruding rims. Nepenthes maxima is possibly the strongest type of pitcher plant and is capable of surviving with a minimum of care.

Nepenthes maxima is endemic to Indonesia and New Guinea where it grows at elevations ranging from 40 to 2,500 metres. The plant can reach a height of 4 metres and the pitchers between 15 and 30 centimetres. Nepenthes maxima produces yellowish brown clusters of flowers and will bloom throughout the year if the conditions are right.
As with other Nepenthes species, Nepenthes maxima requires a great deal of sunlight, but not full sun or it will become dehydrated. It should be given rainwater or distilled water regularly to ensure that it stays moist and should be sprayed with water at regular intervals. The medium and pot must ensure effective drainage to prevent the roots from rotting. The best temperature to cultivate this species is between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius, certainly no higher than 30 degrees. The night-time temperature needs to be around 10 degrees Celsius. If the plant becomes too big, it can be pruned. The best growing medium is neutral to slightly acidic peat. No additional feeding is required. It can be pruned if it becomes too big.
