Drosera neocaledonica is a carnivorous plant from the sundew family, growing a basal rosette up to a couple of centimeters in diameter. Like every species within the genus Drosera, this plant uses its heavy glandular, stir bar-shaped leaves to trap insects for nutrients. The leaves have stout hair on the side of the petioles. The higher the intensity of exposed light, the brighter red the leaves will be. Flower stalks are exceptionally long to prevent killing their valued pollinators. The flowers are relatively large and are colored white. Propagation is most easily done by cuttings of mature plants. Also, harvesting and sowing seeds is possible.Drosera neocaledonica is a carnivorous plant species from the sundew family (Droseraceae), native to the island of New Caledonia. This rare species stands out with its compact rosette of elongated leaves. At the end of each leaf sits an oval trapping surface covered with shimmering glandular hairs that attract and digest small insects. Both the rosette and the leaves are finely haired, giving the plant a soft and exotic appearance. When mature, Drosera neocaledonica can produce long flower stalks bearing delicate white flowers that appear sporadically throughout the year. Its floral stems rise above the leaves so that pollinators are not accidentally trapped. The plant remains small and compact, making it an ideal choice for terrariums or bright windowsills. In the wild, this species grows exclusively on high-altitude peatlands (around 1000 m above sea level) in the southern part of New Caledonia. Botanically, it is believed to have descended from Drosera spathulata, explaining its unique hereditary traits.
Drosera neocaledonica originates exclusively from a few nutrient poor locations of the island New Caledonia. For optimal growth, the optimal day temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius. In the night temperatures could drop to 15 degrees Celsius. In spring and in summer this plant could also grow outdoors but make sure temperature does not drop under 15 degrees Celsius. Place Drosera neocaledonica in a mineral rich, water retaining medium that lacks nutrients and other dissolved salts completely. Clean peat or horticultural sand are some examples. Provide this species with bright to very bright light conditions such as direct sunlight or strong artificial lights. Prevent this plant from drying out at all times. To maintain swampy or soggy conditions, it is possible to place a perforated pot in a tray of water. Always use demineralized water; water containing even a low concentration of minerals could burn the sensitive roots. Fertilizer is best to avoid but it is possible to feed this plant with caught insects once per month.
- Light: Very bright position with direct or strong artificial light
- Temperature: Daytime around 25 °C, nighttime around 15 °C
- Water: Keep constantly moist but not waterlogged; a tray of water is acceptable. Water quality: Use rain, osmosis, or distilled water (never tap water)
- Substrate: Poor mineral mix that retains moisture well – e.g. low-nutrient peat or sand mixture
- Humidity: High; tropical conditions preferred
Drosera neocaledonica is a compact, elegant tropical sundew and a prized rarity for any collector of carnivorous plants.
