Plant information: Sundew 'Drosera lunata'

Drosera lunata originates from tropical regions in southeastern Asia and Australia. It grows in exposed, moist areas. Drosera lunata is a tropical carnivorous plant species from Southeast Asia and Australia. It is an elegant, upright-growing sundew that stands out with its slender stem and round, sticky leaves that glisten in the light. Unlike most sundews, this species does not form a rosette; instead, it grows upward from a small underground tuber. Under bright light, the leaves turn a deep red, while in lower light they remain yellow-green. The plant can reach up to 50 cm tall and produces small white flowers at the top of the stem, offering a beautiful contrast to the red foliage. Each leaf is covered with countless glandular hairs that trap and digest small insects, providing the plant with essential nutrients. In its natural habitat, Drosera lunata grows in open, moist tropical regions, often in sandy or peaty soil low in minerals. It thrives in warm, humid conditions with plenty of light.

Plant care: Sundew 'Drosera lunata'

Drosera lunata loves warmth, light, and constant humidity – just like in its tropical rainforest home. Under proper care, it will grow vigorously and display its shimmering red leaves beautifully. For optimal growth, the optimal day temperature is around 25 degrees Celsius. In the night temperatures could drop to 20 degrees Celsius. In spring and in summer this plant could also grow outdoors but make sure temperature does not drop under 20 degrees Celsius. Place this plant in a humus rich, water retaining medium that lacks nutrients and other dissolved salts completely. Clean peat or horticultural sand are some examples. Provide this species with bright to very bright light conditions such as direct sunlight or strong artificial lights. Prevent this plant from drying out when actively growing. To maintain swampy or soggy conditions, it is possible to place a perforated pot in a tray of water. Always use demineralized water; water containing even a low concentration of minerals could burn the sensitive roots. Fertilizer is best to avoid but it is possible to feed this plant with caught insects once per month.

- Light: Very bright position with direct sunlight or strong grow light

- Temperature: Daytime around 25°C, nighttime at least 20°C Water: Never let the plant dry out. Keep constantly moist or slightly waterlogged. A shallow tray of water works well. Water quality: Always use rain, osmosis, or distilled water — tap water contains too many minerals.

- Humidity: High humidity (tropical conditions)

-Substrate: Poor, humus-rich mix that retains moisture well — e.g., a low-nutrient peat or sand mixture, or sphagnum moss with sand or perlite

-  Feeding: Not required; the plant catches its own prey. Optionally, feed a small insect once a month. Propagation: Easily propagated by separating tubers or sowing seeds.
